Freshman Year of High School Questionnaire
What year was it?
No, not saying
What were your three favorite bands (performers)?
Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Roxy Music
What was your favorite outfit?
Flared jeans, platform shoes, tight tshirt with a logo or band name on it
In this pic, I'm not wearing the platforms, but otherwise this is it. (I'm on the right. On the left is Skippy. (See below.)
What was up with your hair?
Bowieish - short on top, long in the back, what would now be bordering on a mullet, but back then was glam
Who were your best friends?
Skippy and someone whose name I can't remember
What did you do after school?
smoke cigarettes, go to pubs (this was in England), play pool and darts
Where did you work?
?
Did you take the bus?
yep, 10 mile ride on a school bus.
Who did you have a crush on?
Jennie Pudney, who also had a crush on me but was waiting for me to act and so nothing ever happened. Apparently we were going out, though I didn't really realize it at the time, since nothing ever happened.
Did you fight with your parents?
Not much. We didn't really talk anymore.
Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
Olivia Newton-John
Did you smoke cigarettes?
You've got to be kidding. It was my main entertainment.
Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
Backpack. How dorky. Too cool for all that.
Did you have a 'clique'?
The following year, back in NY, I was part of the druggie clique. But freshman year, in England, I was the Yank. I was part of some social stuff, but an outsider, as I've been most of my life in one way or another.
Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly, and Slater?
I had no idea what this was, but nerd that I am I googled it and now I know. An off-school hangout for my school friends. Not really. There was the local pub, where I played pool and drank shandy (starter beer - beer cut with lemonade that they serve kids in England) every night. But I lived 10 miles from school, so it was a different crowd. Not my school friends except for one or two. The following year, at Stuyvesant, I definitely did: Tony's - the burger place next door to the school. I was there progressively more and more until I was basically there or outside of it all day.
Admit it, were you popular?
In a messed-up way. I was the only American at my school of several thousand. That made me The Yank. (There was also Skippy, the Australian. And two sisters from India or Pakistan were The Pakis. They were quite fixated on race there.) So, my foreignness made me an outsider, but also exotic (from America=exotic, ha ha). So one of the prettiest girls in the class wanted to be my girlfriend and I was welcomed into a social circle. My coolness credentials went WAY up, though, when I set a school desk on fire during a class and got caned. (Just on the hands, not the butt.)
Who did you want to be just like?
Roxy-era Brian Ferry.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Never occurred to me to have goals or dreams.
Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
Seriously, no clue.
