Oh my god! I LOVE the Tabard Inn! I associate it with complete and utter inebriation and fireplaces. It's haunted I hear.

That's so cool you know it too. I've been staying there whenever I'm in DC since the 80s. I think I first discovered it cause it was about $50 a night and someone European recommended it -- no bathroom in the room and no AC, just like Europe, but so friendly, and the rooms are fun. Those bath-in-the-hall rooms are still cheap but I stay in the rooms with bathrooms now -- getting redressed to pee isn't my idea of fun-- and they finally added AC, and now they have wifi throughout the building too, but still no TVs and a policy that you can't have any amplified sound in your room. But the restaurant has turned into a snazzy place I can't afford. Weird juxtaposition between the hotel and dinner crowds.
